Cloud Lane House

Los Angeles, CA

Architecture

The setting of this 1950's split level house in the Brentwood hills of Los Angeles provides a panoramic view of the city, hills and ocean.  The design for the addition and alteration of the house was completed by the architects for themselves.  The program for the addition included a studio, a master bath and dressing area and enlarged master bedroom, cantilevered outdoor decks adjacent to the living space, and a modernized kitchen.

The house is dominated by the existing living room, which is a expansive cubic volume located at the center of activity. The plan of the house is divided by a 30 degree break along a line between the living and dining spaces.  The geometry which
this break generates gives a degree of spatial tension to the experience of the house.  The plan of the studio reinforces the 30 degree geometry of the original plan and spatially, the studio provides a counterpoint to the living space: the rectilinear versus triangular space both in plan and section.
